What to buy first, what to check before you order, and what actually goes wrong at the start.

Check your printer diameter before anything else

Filament is sold in two common diameters, 1.75mm and 2.85mm, and they are not interchangeable. A printer built for one will not feed the other. This is the single most expensive mistake a beginner can make, because a spool of the wrong diameter is not returnable once opened and is useless to you.

The figure is in your printer documentation, usually in the specifications table. Most consumer machines sold today use 1.75mm, but do not assume it. Confirm it, write it down, and check it against every listing before you pay.

Buy PLA first

PLA is the standard first material and it is not a compromise choice. It prints at lower temperatures than the alternatives, does not need an enclosure, warps far less, and sticks to the bed with the least persuasion. Every problem you hit in your first month will be easier to diagnose on PLA than on anything else, because you will be dealing with one variable rather than four.

Its limits are real but they arrive later. PLA softens at modest temperatures, so parts left in a hot car or in direct summer sun will droop, and it is not the material for a functional part under sustained load. None of that matters while you are learning what a good first layer looks like.

What the numbers on a spool mean

A listing carries four figures worth reading before you buy.

Most early failures are the first layer

When a print fails in the first week, it is usually not the filament. It is the first layer not sticking, and that comes down to a small number of causes: nozzle height set wrong, a bed that has fingerprints or release agent on it, or a first layer being printed too fast or too cool.

Work through those before you change filament. Print a small test object rather than a six hour job, change one setting at a time, and note what you changed. A methodical hour here saves a week of guessing.

Keep the spool dry from the day it arrives

Filament absorbs moisture from the air, and wet filament prints badly in ways that look like other faults entirely. The habit that prevents it costs nothing: keep the spool in its original sealed bag with the supplied desiccant, and put it back in when you are done rather than leaving it loaded on the machine for weeks.
